About us

Africentric Arts is a non-profit organization that empowers children and youth in creative arts activities that reflect African culture. Started in Toronto in August 2017, Africentric Arts is a platform for creative expression and presentation that allows children and youth to overcome barriers, develop talents, and gain meaningful skills that will enable them to thrive in many areas of their lives.

Our story

Africentric Arts started as a summer camp that provided an authentic space for young people to explore various African arts and cultural forms. The goal was to bring out resistance factors that would influence young people to internalize the uniqueness of our African arts and cultures. We hope they proudly apply this knowledge in all attitudinal and behavioural aspects of their lives.

Since then, we have received warm recognition and established a presence within local communities and educational institutions. Our growth and success have proven the need for such programs in our community. We have expanded our programs and services and opened a new chapter in Edmonton, Alberta.

Mission

To create a space for young people to positively express themselves through various forms of arts that reflect the African culture and create opportunities for fun, education and career advancement.

Vision

To amplify black arts and culture to young people and create a space for identity and skills exploration, inspiration and innovation.

Goals

  • To create culturally competent programs that will allow young people to gain meaningful skills in performing and digital arts that they can utilize in their lives.

  • To bring awareness of African arts and pioneers to young people and create opportunities for others to gain knowledge and embrace diversity.

  • To showcase young people's talent and to create opportunities for personal, social and business development.

  • To create a positive representation of Black culture, help young people affirm values, and embrace their ethnicity and identity with pride.

  • To reduce risky behaviours and create agents of social change. Children will develop sensitivity to social issues and challenge stereotypes. To create partnerships across various sectors that will help strengthen the black community.
